Selection Panel (Techniques)

This page presents a series of guidelines and techniques for efficient usage of the Selection Panel.

NOTE: Before reading this page, we recommend that you read about Selection Panel (Basics).

Moving Hierarchies Into Zones

One or more hierarchies may be placed within each of the four zones.

  • The Columns and Rows zones must each contain at least one hierarchy.
  • If you place multiple hierarchies in the Rows zone, the hierarchies are used to create multiple levels of row headers. And likewise for columns.
  • You can drag-and-drop hierarchies freely between the four zones.
  • You can also drag-and-drop hierarchies within each zone to change their order.

No Duplicate Hierarchies in Selection Panel

Each hierarchy may appear once and only once in the selection panel. If you attempt to add an existing hierarchy, the hierarchy will be moved it from the current zone to the zone that you are requesting. For example, if the Month Dates hierarchy is currently located in Rows and you attempt to add it to Columns, the Month Dates hierarchy will be moved from Rows to Columns.

Viewing Hierarchy Elements

Double clicking a hierarchy in any of the zones will display the relevant element tree and the current element selection. Right-clicking on a hierarchy and selecting View Elements has the same effect.

Long Lists on Rows

In general, users should place long lists of items in rows for easy scrolling DOWN a table. The row selections appear as categories within charts, making charts easy to grasp (categories usually appear on the x-axis of standard charts).

Item Comparisons on Columns

In general, users should place short lists of items on columns for easy side-by-side comparisons ACROSS a table. The column selections appear as series within charts, making it easy to perform comparisons (series are denoted in the legend of standard charts).

Measures Dimension Always Present

The Measures dimension is always present in one of the four zones:

  • When Measures is placed in the SubSet zone, only one measurement can be selected. Selecting two or more measures (or double clicking on any measure) causes the Measures to be moved into the Columns zone.
  • When Measures is located in the Columns, Rows or Slices zones, multiple measures can be selected.

Multiple Hierarchies in SubSet Zone

In general, the SubSet zone is intended to contain a single element from a single hierarchy. If multiple hierarchies are placed within the Sub-Set zone, a single element will be used from each hierarchy and the query will be performed by combining these individual elements.

SubSet and Slices

Automatic Swapping Between SubSet and Slices Zones

If a user selects elements from a hierarchy's element tree AND the hierarchy is not in ROWS or COLUMNS, it is assumed that the elements are to be used as query filters.

  • If a single element is chosen, the hierarchy is moved to the SubSet zone.
  • If multiple elements are chosen, the hierarchy is moved to the Slices zone.
  • A hierarchy in the SubSet zone that has new elements added will automatically be moved to Slices zone.
  • A hierarchy in the Slices zone whose number of selected elements is reduced to a single element, will be automatically moved to SubSet zone.
Pinning Hierarchies to a Zone

The automatic swapping of hierarchies between the SubSet and Slices zones is useful in most situations. However, there may be special cases where the user wishes to lock hierarchies into the SubSet or Slices zone without automatic swapping.

  • Clicking on the large pin icon in the SubSet zone will lock all SubSet hierarchies in place, regardless of how many elements are selected for them. If you then select multiple elements for a hierarchy in the SubSet zone, the elements will be combined.
  • Likewise, clicking on the large pin icon in the Slices zone will lock all Slices hierarchies in place, regardless of how many elements are selected for them.

NOTE: The large pin is available in the SubSet and Slices zones, but not in the Column and Row zones.
